Physiatry / Physical Medicine
Physical medicine focuses on restoring function to people. Physiatrists
are physicians who treat a wide range of problems from sore shoulders
to spinal cord injuries. They treat acute and chronic pain and
musculoskeletal disorders.
Physiatrists' patients include people with arthritis, tendonitis, any
kind of back pain, and work or sports related injuries.
Physiatrists do not perform surgery, but they do offer a broad spectrum
of medical services. In addition to medications, they may prescribe
assistive devices, such as braces or an artificial limb. Physiatrists
also perform electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction tests to help
diagnose conditions that cause pain, weakness and numbness.
